Inspired by 19th-century European chamber music recitals, Iskandar Widjaja brings a new twist to the concept with a mix of masterpieces by Edvard Grieg, Pyotr Tchaikovsky, and Pablo de Sarasate, alongside modern Indonesian works like “Konserto Nusantara” by Joko Lemazh. The performance promises a musical journey through various emotional and cultural landscapes.
The concert will be divided into two parts. The first part features Western classical pieces starting with Grieg’s “Sonata No. 3,” followed by Tchaikovsky’s “Valse-Scherzo,” and concluding with the technically demanding “Zigeunerweisen” by Sarasate. The spotlight of the second part will be “Konserto Nusantara,” a grand composition blending regional songs like “Bungong Jeumpa,” “O Ina Ni Keke,” “Paris Barantai,” “Ayo Mama,” and “Buka Pintu” in classical violin arrangements.
The collaboration with Stephanie Onggowinoto adds a special touch to the concert. Described by Iskandar as an “ideal partner for creating a deep musical dialogue,” their duet is promised to bring harmonious dynamics between the passionate violin and precise piano.
The “Classical Recital” is designed to be a more intimate experience compared to previous large orchestras, allowing for closer interaction between musicians and the audience. Iskandar aims for the audience to feel the emotions in the music, hoping to captivate both classical music enthusiasts and younger generations unfamiliar with the genre.
With a curated selection of repertoire, including “Konserto Nusantara,” Iskandar honors cultural heritage while showcasing classical music in a local context. As a musician with international acclaim, Iskandar sees Jakarta as a place to share a more personal energy with the audience.
Tickets for the concert are available online at varying prices, catering to those seeking an exclusive experience in the limited-capacity venue. For those who missed the previous show, “The Classical Recital” offers a rare opportunity to witness a collaboration between two top Indonesian musicians in a unique format.
Through this concert, Iskandar Widjaja not only enriches the Indonesian music scene but also bridges the gap between high and popular art, global and local. It serves as a testament to the relevance of classical music when nurtured with creativity and a love for cultural roots.
