The indie rock quartet from New Zealand, The Beths, has officially announced the release of their fourth album titled ‘Straight Line Was A Lie’, along with the launch of their latest single titled “No Joy”. This album will be their first full release since ‘Expert in a Dying Field’ in 2022, and it marks The Beths’ debut under their new label, ANTI-, which has been their creative home since early 2025.
Exploring the main theme of “existential vertigo”, ‘Straight Line Was A Lie’ will delve into the feelings of emotional disorientation and the search for meaning in the ever-changing landscape of modern life. This latest project is described as a reflective and personal phase in the musical journey of lead vocalist and songwriter, Elizabeth Stokes.
In her official statement, Stokes revealed that the songwriting on this album was heavily influenced by her personal experiences when she began taking SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors), a type of antidepressant commonly prescribed to manage mood disorders and anxiety.
“I feel like I have a new brain. And I was writing songs in a very instinctive way, so when my instincts changed a bit, everything felt strange. Not as bad as before, but also not entirely comfortable,” she explained.
Furthermore, Stokes revealed that the single “No Joy” literally reflects the condition of anhedonia, where a person loses the ability to feel happiness.
“Interestingly, anhedonia occurs when depression is at its lowest point, and also when I feel quite good after starting to use SSRI. I don’t feel sad, I would even say I feel fine. However, the things I used to enjoy no longer bring happiness. It feels flat, there is no joy,” Stokes described, illustrating the emotional foundation of the song.
The single “No Joy” brings the distinctive approach of The Beths, with dynamic guitar melodies, rich vocal harmonies, and honest lyrics. This song also serves as a glimpse into the musicality that will be offered in ‘Straight Line Was A Lie’, which is predicted to maintain the smart and emotional pop-rock identity of The Beths, but with a more complex layer of maturity.
As one of the most respected alternative bands from the South Pacific region, The Beths have gained widespread recognition for their ability to blend sharp lyrics with energetic musicality. Their third album, ‘Expert in a Dying Field’, received praise from various renowned music outlets.
Now, through ‘Straight Line Was A Lie’, The Beths seem ready to step into a new phase that is more contemplative, without losing the sonic strength and emotional honesty that endears them to listeners.
The album is scheduled to be released in the coming months and has already generated high expectations from both longtime fans and new listeners seeking a fresh sound with grounded storytelling. The Beths serve as a reminder that in the increasingly noisy music world, honesty in creation can be the most powerful force.
